By: Nurwahidah Bi
Genre: Horror
This short story was written to celebrate 10 million subscribers of Kak Bi’s favorite YouTuber, Nadia Omara. I originally submitted for an event hosted on Nadia Omara’s channel, but unfortunately, it wasn’t selected, ehehe…. So, I decided to post it here on my personal blog so everyone can enjoy it. By the way, this is purely fiction, please don’t take it to heart.
And the story was initially written in Indonesian language, but I've created this English version for my global audience who might want to read the English version of the 'Diamond Play Button' short story.
Enjoy this Nadia Omara horror short story, presented by Kak Bi.

[Horror Short Story]—Nadia sat in front of the camera, wearing a plain black hijab. This time, she wanted to record something special. On her YouTube channel, which featured everything from KHW, Crime Stories, Serial Killers, History, to Indonesian Crime, had finally reached 10 million subscribers.
The box containing YouTube’s diamond play button had finally arrived after weeks of waiting. The award for her years of hard work lay on the studio table. It was an extraordinary achievement after many years of sharing terrifying crime cases and eerie supernatural tales that always managed to send shivers down her viewers’ spines.
But something felt strange the moment Nadia decided to open the box alone. For some reason, the small home studio; usually warm and cozy, looked darker than usual. The bright lights around her camera setup no longer seemed strong enough to chase away the creeping shadows gathering in the corners.
The air felt unnaturally cold, even though it was warm outside. “It’s not even eight o’clock yet. Maybe I’m just nervous. Should I wait until later?” Nadia muttered, trying to push aside her unease.
After preparing everything, she began recording. “Hi, Wak. Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh. Thank you for clicking on this video.” Her voice was cheerful in the opening, though inside, something felt unsettled.
She went on to share her long journey on YouTube; from her very first subscriber to the millions now faithfully watching every upload. Just as she was about to open the diamond play button box in front of her, the studio lights suddenly went out. Strangely, the camera kept recording, though the room itself was cloaked in darkness.
“Huh, did the power just go out, Wak?” She muttered, standing to check the switch. As she walked toward it, Nadia froze. A faint rustling came from behind the door. The doorknob rattled, as though someone was trying to open it from the outside.
Panic set in. She quickly grabbed her flashlight and called one of her team members by phone, urging them to come immediately. Moments later, she heard something shifting, crawling, slithering across the floor. Nadia stood paralyzed, convincing herself it was only her imagination.
She glanced at the camera. It was still rolling. “Wow, this could make content. But… no, I’m too scared.” Nadia hurriedly switched the camera off and tried to leave the studio to find help.
But the door was locked from the outside. The strange noises grew louder, closer. “Who’s there?” She tried to say firmly, but no reply came. Her breathing quickened. Her cold hands trembled as she reached for the switch, but the lights wouldn’t turn back on.
The tension thickened as heavy, dragging footsteps echoed outside the studio. Something—or someone—was approaching, carrying… something.Nadia grabbed her phone, sweeping the flashlight beam around. The door creaked, slowly pushing open. Terrified, Nadia began reciting verses of Ayat Kursi.
Just for a moment, but clear enough, she saw it: a tall black shadow looming in the doorway, staring at her from the darkness. Nadia gasped, dropping her phone. Its flashlight lay on the floor, illuminating only a small patch of the room. No one was there. The door hung slightly ajar, and the shadow she saw had already vanished.
Suddenly, the lights flickered back on. Nadia sat back down in front of the camera again, trying to steady her breath, cold sweat dripping from her forehead down to her armpits.“Wawak, I… I just experienced something really strange,” she said shakily into the camera, forcing herself to stay composed.

[Horror Short Story]—But when Nadia looked at the camera monitor to check the footage, her eyes widened. On the screen, right behind her, stood a dark shadow, motionless, silent, and looming right over her shoulder. She spun around, but nothing was there, the space was empty. Too terrified to continue, Nadia decided to stop filming and just waiting for her team.
After staring at the box in silence for a while, she decided to record again—just the unboxing. But when she opened it, it held no diamond play button at all. Instead, only a small, folded letter lay inside. Her trembling hands unfolded it:
“Congratulations on your success, Nadia. We have always been watching and supporting you from the very beginning. Do not be afraid, the darkness is not your enemy.”
Forcing an awkward uneasy smile, Nadia whispered into the camera, “Maybe… this is their way of congratulating me.”
Suddenly, she heard noises outside her room studio. Nadia rushed out to see what was happening and froze. Two of her friends were holding a large box, while another carried a cake celebrating her 10 million subscribers. The official package containing the Diamond Play Button had just arrived. It was right here, outside. Not the one she had been holding earlier.
“Then… what was the box I unboxed just now? What did I just open?” Nadia choked out, her voice barely a whisper. “It shouldn’t be like this,” she sobbed, clutching the mysterious letter with no known sender.
